North Macedonian prosecutors urge Constitutional Court to review salary cuts

The Council of Public Prosecutors, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Association of Public Prosecutors in North Macedonia are calling on the Constitutional Court to urgently review the constitutionality of recent salary laws. The legal challenge concerns amendments to the laws governing the salaries of public prosecutors and members of the Council of Public Prosecutors.

These amendments have resulted in a third reduction of the coefficients used to calculate prosecutor salaries. Prosecutors argue that these cuts create a significant disparity between judicial and prosecutorial functions and violate European and international standards. They contend that the reductions threaten the independence and autonomy of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The Constitutional Court has previously indicated in a decision to initiate proceedings that while the legislature has the right to regulate salaries, there is doubt as to whether these specific reductions infringe upon the constitutionally guaranteed independence of the prosecution and the right of employees to adequate earnings.
