North Macedonia's Safe City system cuts traffic accidents by 40%

In the first five months of 2026, North Macedonia’s "Safe City" traffic‑monitoring system, rolled out in Skopje, Tetovo and Kumanovo, recorded about 120,000 traffic violations, 95 % of which involved speeding. Minister of Internal Affairs Pançe Toshkovski said the programme has reduced traffic accidents by roughly 40 %, with 34 fatalities compared with 55 in the same period a year earlier.

Toshkovski also reported a broad crackdown on crime: around 30 organized‑crime groups have been neutralised, six corruption networks dismantled, and roughly 500 criminal cases uncovered. Over 1,600 drug‑related offences were identified, about 1,900 suspects were reported, and approximately 6.2 tonnes of narcotics – including a cocaine seizure that rose more than 300 % – were seized, alongside 550 weapons. He pledged that the Safe City system will be fully deployed nationwide by year‑end.
