North Macedonia's Unity Deal Questioned as Ohrid Agreement Seen as Expired

Sefer Selimi, a political commentator, argues that North Macedonia’s multietnic unitary state rests on two pillars – the 2001 Ohrid Framework Agreement and the ambition to join the European Union. He says the current government, led by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, has begun dismantling those foundations, first by ignoring Albanian political demands and later by undermining fair representation, the official status of the Albanian language, and mechanisms that protect ethnic balance.

Mickoski described the Ohrid Agreement as effectively "dead," claiming its original purpose – ending the 2001 armed conflict – has been fulfilled, and asserted that constitutional reforms render EU integration unattainable. Selimi calls for a comprehensive review of the compromise, urging Albanian parties, civil‑society groups, the diaspora and academic elites to respond to the new political reality.
