North Port residents organize over data center utility concerns

Residents in North Port, Florida, are organizing to address the potential impact of hyperscale data centers on local resources. The Team North Port Citizens Action Network is hosting meetings to prepare community members for upcoming discussions at City Hall regarding electricity demand, water usage, and utility costs.

A City Commission meeting is scheduled for August 31, followed by a workshop on September 3. During the workshop, representatives from Florida Power & Light and the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority are expected to discuss infrastructure planning and resource consumption.

Concerns center on how energy-intensive data centers, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence, may necessitate upgrades to power grids and water systems. Such infrastructure requirements can lead to increased utility rates for local customers.
