North Rhine-Westphalia allocates €1 million for winter cold relief

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia is providing one million euros to support homeless and unhoused individuals during the winter months. The funds are available through an unbureaucratic process for approximately 150 independent providers and various volunteer initiatives under the state initiative ‘Endlich ein ZUHAUSE’.

The financial aid is intended to procure essential supplies, including winter sleeping bags, mats, warm clothing, blankets, and power banks. It also covers the provision of long-lasting food, warm beverages, and meals, as well as the setup or rental of heated tents and living containers.

Social Minister Karl-Josef Laumann noted that many unhoused people suffer from existing health issues, making low temperatures and wet conditions potentially life-threatening. The initiative specifically targets those living on the streets who do not utilize available emergency shelters. The Diocesan Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Cologne is coordinating the distribution of these resources across the state.
