North Rhine-Westphalia allocates record €16.84 billion to municipalities

The state of North Rhine‑Westphalia will provide €16.84 billion for municipal financing in 2026, a record level that is 6.8 % higher than the previous year and €390 million above earlier estimates. The allocation serves as a planning basis for local budgets and is intended to sustain childcare centres, modernise schools, maintain roads and protect social services.

Specific grants announced include €5,300,962.58 for Monheim am Rhein, €6,414,519.55 for Langenfeld and €4,997,358.43 for Hilden. At the same time, other municipalities are warning that they are at their financial limit. Lünen’s city treasurer André Jethon urged the state to increase its contribution, citing the heavy cost burden of integration assistance and calling for a stronger financial share from the Land.

The funding programme is part of a broader investment plan that foresees €31.2 billion in infrastructure spending over the next twelve years, with roughly €21.3 billion earmarked for local governments.
