North Rhine-Westphalia breast cancer screening participation low

In North Rhine-Westphalia, only about half of the eligible women are participating in the mammography screening program for early breast cancer detection. Medical associations are urging women to schedule appointments, noting that the screening can save lives by detecting tumors before they are palpable or have spread to lymph nodes.

The program is designed for women aged 50 to 75 and is offered free of charge to those with statutory health insurance, with the option to participate every two years. Statistically, breast cancer is diagnosed in 6 out of every 1,000 participants.

To improve accessibility, particularly in rural areas, mobile mammography units known as 'Mammobile' are deployed. In the Rhineland, there are 29 fixed screening units and five mobile units available to serve 1.7 million eligible women. In Westphalia-Lippe, 46 fixed units and two mobile units serve 1.2 million eligible women.
