World Children's Day focuses on rights and participation

World Children's Day, observed on September 20, serves as a global platform to advocate for the rights, protection, and active participation of young people. Under the 2026 motto “Strong Children, Strong Future!”, various organizations and communities in Germany and Austria are organizing events to highlight the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In Germany, political and social groups are calling for structural improvements. The SPD-Bundestagsfraktion emphasizes the need for better education, mental health support, and social participation. The Kinderschutzbund NRW is demanding mandatory involvement of youth in decisions affecting their lives, noting that poverty remains a significant barrier to such participation. Additionally, the Deutsche Sportjugend (dsj) is calling for better physical activity opportunities, noting that many children lack access to safe spaces and sports facilities.

Local celebrations include community festivals in Wesselburen, Marl, and Wiesbaden, as well as museum programs in Altenburg. Sports clubs, such as the Fußball- und Leichtathletik-Verband Westfalen, are using the day to promote values like fair play. Meanwhile, psychological associations are highlighting a rise in mental health challenges among youth, linking well-being to educational success.
