North Rhine-Westphalia considers third year of free daycare
The North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) state government is still considering the implementation of a third year of free daycare, despite significant financial pressures and high debt levels.
The NRW Finance Ministry has indicated that the proposal is not yet ruled out as unfeasible. A decision may be clearer following the next tax estimate in November. Implementing a third year of fee-free daycare is estimated to cost the state approximately 230 million euros per year.
For the 2027 fiscal year, the state government is planning a record budget of 115.5 billion euros, which represents a 2.9 percent increase over the current budget. To manage this, officials aim to implement savings of roughly 1.5 billion euros across all departments.
