German construction sector faces bridge crisis and apprenticeship overhaul
Experts Steffen Marx and Martin Claßen warn that Germany’s “build‑and‑forget” bridge maintenance policy has led to frequent closures and costly rebuilds, with bridges such as the Carolabrücke in Dresden and the Nordbrücke in Bonn already causing traffic disruptions.
Transport Minister Oliver Krischer has urged the new Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger to make the renovation of bridges and rail networks in North Rhine‑Westphalia a priority, calling for federal funds to be directed to the region’s most pressing infrastructure problems.
From 1 August 2026, new apprenticeship regulations for 19 construction occupations will replace intermediate exams with a stretched final exam and retain a minimum of 30 weeks of in‑company training. The reforms also embed climate‑protection, sustainability and building‑in‑existing‑stock requirements throughout the training.
A survey of 400 German construction firms shows 36 % expect revenue growth in 2026, 34 % anticipate stable sales and 16 % foresee a decline. Over a third of firms expect a clear revenue increase, while another third expect results comparable to the previous year, indicating a cautiously optimistic outlook for the sector despite a difficult environment.
