North Rhine-Westphalia daycare centers face rising closures
A scientific report titled ‘Kindertagesbetreuung NRW 2026’, produced by the research association of the German Youth Institute and TU Dortmund, indicates a significant shift in childcare provision in North Rhine-Westphalia. For the 2026/27 childcare year, the number of new daycare openings is expected to be lower than the number of closures, with 80 planned openings contrasted against 124 closures.
Total legally funded facilities in the region stand at 10,805, which is 44 fewer than the previous year. There has also been a notable decline in requested places: 736 fewer for children under three and 8,241 fewer for children aged three and older. Childcare services (Kindertagespflege) are particularly affected, seeing a decrease of approximately 7,800 places compared to the previous year.
The North Rhine-Westphalia Family Ministry attributed the decline to falling birth rates. Additionally, the report highlights significant staffing issues; in 2025, approximately 36,000 reports of staff shortages were recorded across 6,000 different facilities, meaning 55 percent of daycare centers reported at least one instance of understaffing.
