North Rhine-Westphalia extremism prevention funds see low uptake
Approximately 2.9 million euros of a 5 million euro fund designated for extremism prevention among young refugees in North Rhine-Westphalia remained unspent in 2025. NRW Integration Minister Verena Schäffer attributed the low uptake to short application deadlines provided to municipalities.
The state program, ‘Teil. Sein. NRW’, has funded 43 municipal measures. However, officials have not yet provided data on the number of young refugees reached or evidence regarding changes in behavior or attitudes resulting from the spending.
Opposition members from the SPD criticized the situation, calling the unused funds a sign of ‘planlessness’ and a failure to follow through on security commitments made following the Solingen terror attack in August 2024.
