North Rhine-Westphalia faces rising truancy and teacher shortages

Educational challenges are mounting in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), characterized by rising truancy rates and ongoing teacher shortages. In 2025, five regional school authorities initiated nearly 12,000 proceedings against guardians for violations of compulsory schooling, a 25 percent increase from the previous year. Despite this trend, the state Ministry of Education, led by Dorothee Feller, has declined to implement a centralized system for tracking absenteeism, citing the bureaucratic burden on school authorities.

Simultaneously, the state government is facing scrutiny regarding its commitment to hire 10,000 additional teaching staff. While the ministry reports that 12,600 more people have entered the school system over the last four years, it cannot specify how many are qualified teachers versus social workers or administrative staff due to a lack of professional markers in current statistics. Opposition members have criticized this lack of transparency, noting that teacher vacancies have reportedly risen from 4,400 to 7,800 during the current legislative period.
