North Rhine-Westphalia faces school readiness challenges
The Association of Counties of North Rhine-Westphalia (LKT NRW) has issued a position paper addressing significant challenges regarding school readiness among children in the state. Committee Chairman Frank Rock stated that, on average, every third child in North Rhine-Westphalia lacks sufficient German language skills or other fundamental abilities required to follow lessons upon entering school.
To address this, the LKT NRW is calling for integrated early childhood support involving parents, daycare centers, primary schools, and health departments. The association is seeking coordinated measures from both federal and state governments to ensure children are adequately prepared for the education system.
In the Rhein-Kreis Neuss region, local educational reports highlight similar trends. Approximately 37 percent of children entering school show language development irregularities, while nearly 27 percent require assistance with hand-eye coordination. Additionally, regional data shows a shift in school preferences, with Gymnasiums and comprehensive schools (Gesamtschulen) becoming the most popular options, while the number of traditional Hauptschulen has declined significantly.
