North Rhine-Westphalia greenhouse gas emissions halved since 1990

Greenhouse gas emissions in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have more than halved since 1990, according to preliminary data from the state environmental agency. The 53 percent reduction in the region outperforms the 48 percent decrease recorded at the German federal level.

In 2025, the state emitted approximately 171.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents, representing a 4 percent decline from the previous year. The energy sector remains the largest contributor to emissions, though reductions have been driven by decreased reliance on lignite and mineral oil, alongside significant growth in renewable energy, particularly photovoltaics.

Industrial emissions saw a 7 percent drop last year, attributed to high energy prices and production decreases in energy-intensive sectors. Transport emissions also fell by 2 percent in 2025. Mona Neubaur, the NRW Minister for Economic Affairs, Climate Protection and Energy, stated that climate protection is being achieved through industrial modernization rather than a reduction in industrial activity.
