Germany increases drone defense spending amid security concerns

German interior ministers are increasing investments in drone defense technology to counter rising security threats. In Baden-Württemberg, 2.5 million euros are being allocated for new interception technology for the police. Other states are also scaling up: Hessen is investing 10 million euros, Lower Saxony is planning 7.3 million euros, and Saxony anticipates spending up to 7.9 million euros through 2028.

In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Interior Minister Herbert Reul has highlighted the high security importance of protecting critical infrastructure, military sites, and logistics hubs from drone misuse. While no concrete evidence of imminent drone attacks has been found at NRW airports, Reul criticized the “jurisdictional chaos” between federal and state authorities, noting that unclear responsibilities could hinder effective defense during an actual incident.

Additionally, Herbert Reul has announced his intention to run for re-election in the 2027 state election, continuing his long-standing political career focused on internal security and policing.
