German police launch burglary prevention campaign

German police authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate have launched a prevention campaign as the burglary season begins with the onset of darker months. The campaign, including a dedicated “Day of Burglary Protection,” aims to advise residents on securing homes against increasing criminal activity.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, statistics from 2025 showed an average of 75 burglaries or attempted burglaries per day, with December being the peak month at approximately 129 cases per day. Police officials noted that while total cases saw a slight decrease, professional international gangs often contribute to the winter surge. In Düsseldorf, police are offering specialized consultations to demonstrate how easily doors and windows can be breached.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) reported nearly 3,000 burglaries in 2025. Authorities recommend mechanical security upgrades, such as reinforced locks and window handles, as well as behavioral measures like using light timers and not sharing travel plans on social media. Financial support via KfW loans is available for residents to upgrade home security systems.
