North Rhine-Westphalia reports 104,665 people in homelessness accommodation

As of late January 2026, 104,665 people were accommodated in facilities due to homelessness in North Rhine-Westphalia, according to data from the state agency IT. NRW. This figure represents an 11% decrease, or 13,220 people, compared to the previous year.

While the total number of accommodated individuals fell, the number of homeless people with German citizenship rose by 4% to 14,490. Conversely, the number of non-German citizens in accommodation decreased by 13%, totaling 90,175 people, who make up 86% of the total recorded group. Notable decreases were seen among Ukrainian nationals (-22%) and Syrian nationals (-21%).

Minors accounted for approximately 26% of those accommodated, with 27,485 individuals under the age of 18. The vast majority of these minors (97%) were placed in multi-person households or with their families. In terms of adult age groups, 13% were between 18 and 25, 55% were between 25 and 65, and 6% were aged 65 or older.
