North Rhine-Westphalia reports decline in youth crime
Youth crime in North Rhine-Westphalia has seen a significant decline, according to a new report presented by Interior Minister Herbert Reul. The number of suspects under the age of 21 has decreased by approximately six percent compared to the previous year, and nearly 40 percent compared to 2023.
Total offenses attributed to children and young adults fell from 138,000 to roughly 128,500, representing a seven percent decrease. Notable declines were seen in thefts, physical injury, insults, and property damage. Specifically, violence in schools dropped by 14.2 percent, and alcohol-related offenses by young people reached a ten-year low.
In contrast to the general downward trend, internet-related crimes among those under 21 rose by 2.5 percent, totaling about 10,400 suspects. Minister Reul warned that the internet is not a lawless space and emphasized that police will act against online threats, insults, and extortion.
