North Rhine-Westphalia reports record numbers of new teacher trainees

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has announced record numbers of teacher trainees and increased educational spending. Nearly 4,000 trainee teachers are scheduled to begin their preparatory service on November 1, marking the highest level in nearly a decade and a record for the current legislative period.

Minister President Hendrik Wüst and Education Minister Dorothee Feller noted that the number of trainees increased by approximately 500 compared to the previous year. Growth is particularly notable in primary education, where the number of trainees starting service rose from approximately 600 in November 2022 to nearly 800 this year.

Since the beginning of the 2022 legislative period, more than 30,000 people have been permanently employed in the school service in North Rhine-Westphalia, including approximately 25,000 teachers. The state government claims that North Rhine-Westphalia allocates a higher proportion of its funds to education than any other German state.
