North Rhine-Westphalia reports surge in domestic violence deaths
A new report from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office reveals a significant increase in fatalities resulting from domestic violence. While the total number of domestic violence cases rose only slightly to a record high of 61,900—a 0.8 percent increase—the number of deaths surged by 27 percent. Last year, 65 people lost their lives in domestic violence incidents, compared to 51 the previous year.
North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul noted that most victims are women and emphasized that many reside in the same household as their attackers. Reul urged the public to report incidents early to allow law enforcement to utilize legal tools such as restraining orders and eviction notices. He also highlighted a significant dark figure of unreported crimes due to fear or shame.
