North Rhine-Westphalia introduces new educational priorities for 2026/27 school year

As the 2026/27 school year begins in North Rhine-Westphalia, Education Minister Dorothee Feller has announced several key initiatives for the state's 2.5 million students. A major focus is the strengthening of writing skills in primary schools to counter the digital trend of 'swiping' on devices. Additionally, the state is piloting 'Lernstand 5', a new voluntary learning assessment for students transitioning to secondary schools, which is intended to become mandatory by 2030.

Regarding infrastructure, a nationwide legal entitlement to all-day primary school care has taken effect, initially targeting first-graders. The state government aims to expand the number of all-day school places (OGS) to 550,000 by 2027.

In legal and political developments, the Higher Administrative Court in Münster has changed its stance on religious school admissions, ruling that a Catholic school in Bonn must admit a non-religious student based on residential proximity. Meanwhile, the SPD opposition is calling for increased state funding for learning materials and class trips, arguing that the total cost of schooling can reach up to 20,000 euros per child.
