North Rhine-Westphalia sees rise in gender entry changes
Since the implementation of the Self-Determination Act (SBGG) in November 2024, North Rhine-Westphalia has seen a significant increase in gender entry changes. Data from the Federal Statistical Office shows that 1,916 changes were recorded in the state in 2024, rising to 2,947 in 2025.
In 2025, the majority of these changes in North Rhine-Westphalia involved transitions from female to male (1,265 cases) and male to female (881 cases), with 801 other combinations including entries for 'diverse' or 'no specification'. This follows a broader national trend where female-to-male transitions are the most frequent.
Nationally, the new law triggered a sharp spike in applications; while only 596 changes were reported under the previous Transsexualism Act between January and October 2024, 7,057 changes were recorded in November 2024 alone. Preliminary nationwide data for the first four months of 2026 shows 2,646 registered changes.
