North Rhine-Westphalia to award State Prize to United Kingdom

The German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has announced that the 2026 State Prize will be awarded to the people of the United Kingdom. This marks the first time the state's highest honor will be bestowed upon an entire nation.

The award commemorates the 80th anniversary of the founding of North Rhine-Westphalia, which traces its origins back to the British military government in 1946. The state chancery stated that the prize honors the unique historical connection and the contributions of British citizens in maintaining the bond between the two regions over eight decades.

North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst noted that what began as a political decision has evolved into a close friendship between the people of both nations. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham welcomed the announcement, expressing joy at the recognition of the UK's citizens.
