North Rhine-Westphalia Transport Minister Warns Bridge Infrastructure Crisis

Transport Minister Oliver Krischer of North Rhine‑Westphalia told an audience at the IHK‑Pavilion in Neuss that the region faces an infrastructure crisis, with roughly a third of Rhine bridges limited or completely unusable. He warned that deteriorating bridges are cutting off traffic axes and threaten jobs and prosperity.

The meeting, organised by the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein, focused on accelerating planning and construction of new bridges and improving legal procedures. A joint legal study by regional chambers of commerce supplied concrete proposals for faster yet legally sound approvals. Krischer cited a newly discovered damage on the Josef‑Kardinal‑Frings‑Bridge that required an immediate lane for pedestrians and cyclists, underscoring the urgency of investing in both maintenance of existing structures and new builds.
