North Ronaldsay celebrates first baby birth in 34 years

The remote Scottish island of North Ronaldsay, part of the Orkney archipelago, has celebrated its first baby birth in 34 years. Duncan Wilder Thorstein Traill Suarez Ford was born on September 15 to parents Alice Traill Ford and Jorge Suarez.

Because the island has no hospital or resident doctor, the birth required significant logistical coordination. Alice Traill Ford, whose grandfather was a former landowner on the island, planned the delivery to take place at her family home. To ensure safety, two midwives were flown to the island via Coastguard helicopter after the mother's water broke following the final scheduled flight of the day.

The community, which has a population of approximately 70 people, marked the event with a flag to notify neighbors and a celebration involving handmade gifts. The last birth on the island was recorded in August 1992.
