North Sea developments: Norderney tourism and Sylt wildlife concerns

Recent reports from the German North Sea highlight both tourism trends on Norderney and environmental concerns near Sylt.

On Norderney, accommodation prices vary significantly based on season and location. In the off-season, simple pensions offer double rooms for approximately 80 to 110 euros per night. During peak season, mid-range hotels typically charge between 140 and 210 euros per night, with weekly costs for a couple ranging from 1,000 to 1,800 euros depending on amenities and proximity to the beach.

Meanwhile, near the island of Sylt, environmentalists are raising alarms over the declining population of harbour porpoises. A young porpoise was recently found dead on a beach in Kampen. Experts from the Schutzstation Wattenmeer identify several threats to the species, including noise pollution from offshore wind farms which disrupts echolocation, maritime traffic, and chemical leakage from unexploded World War II munitions resting on the seabed.
