North Sea drilling projects spark debate in UK

The UK government faces a growing internal debate over whether to authorize two major North Sea drilling projects: the Rosebank oil field and the Jackdaw gas field. While the Labour Party previously pledged not to approve new drilling licenses, recent discussions suggest a shift toward considering energy sovereignty and supply security.

Green energy entrepreneur Dale Vince has advocated for the approval of both projects, provided that the oil and gas produced are subject to price controls to ensure they remain cheaper than imported energy. Conversely, SNP MP Pete Wishart has called for the rejection of the Rosebank project, arguing it would undermine the nation's climate commitments.

The Jackdaw gas field, located east of Aberdeen, is reportedly ready for operation within months, whereas the Rosebank project, located west of the Shetland Islands, would require more time for drilling and production. The decision remains a point of contention between those prioritizing low energy prices and jobs and those focused on carbon neutrality.
