North Sea shrimp fishing faces significant decline

Shrimp fishermen in the North Sea are experiencing a sharp decline in catches during the current autumn season, following a record-breaking year in 2025. In Schleswig-Holstein, catch volumes have reportedly dropped by at least 50 percent compared to the previous year.

Experts attribute the poor yields to several factors. In northern Lower Saxony, catches have almost completely ceased. Fisheries expert Philipp Oberdörffer suggests the presence of whiting (Wittling), a natural predator of the shrimp, as a primary cause, noting that these fish have been consuming the juvenile shrimp population.

Additionally, increasingly unstable autumn weather and rising storm activity are expected to further hinder fishing efforts. While catches remain slightly better near the East Frisian Islands, the Ems region, and in the adjacent Netherlands, the overall season is being described as significantly below average.
