North Sea tourism: Attractions and winter camping trends

Tourism along the German North Sea coast features diverse attractions and seasonal challenges. In Norddeich, key sites include the local beach bordering the Wadden Sea, the seal station for rehabilitating orphaned seals, and the Whale Museum, which displays a 15-meter whale skeleton.

Winter camping in the North Sea region is heavily influenced by geography. Campsites located behind the dike can remain open year-round due to flood protection, whereas those in the dike foreland must be cleared in autumn to avoid storm risks. Despite these logistical hurdles, demand for winter camping in Schleswig-Holstein has grown significantly, with guest arrivals increasing from approximately 24,000 to 59,000 between November and February over the last decade. However, the industry association warns that winter operations are not financially viable for all businesses due to these seasonal constraints.
