North Sea wind farm cables raise marine life concerns
The rapid expansion of offshore wind energy in the North Sea is leading to an increasing number of subsea electricity cables, which generate electromagnetic fields (EMF). New research conducted under the Dutch Offshore Wind Energy Ecological Programme (WOZEP) is investigating how these fields are distributed and their potential impact on marine ecosystems.
Scientists are examining how EMF might affect various species, including sharks, rays, the European flat oyster, sand tube worms, and harbor porpoises. Potential consequences under investigation include changes in behavior, migration patterns, feeding activity, reproduction, and physiological development. The strength of these fields is influenced by electrical current, cable design, burial depth, and distance from the source.
The Dutch Fishermen’s Association has expressed concern regarding the speed of wind farm and cable infrastructure deployment. The association is calling for more extensive research and monitoring, warning that significant knowledge gaps remain regarding the long-term effects of electromagnetic exposure on fish populations and their habitats.
