North Sea WWI shipwrecks found leaking TNT into marine ecosystem
Researchers investigating World War I shipwrecks in the North Sea have discovered that decaying munitions are leaking TNT and its degradation products into the marine environment. The study, part of the NorthSeaWrecks project led by Aarhus University and the Alfred Wegener Institute, focused on the German submarine UC-30, which sank off the coast of Rømø in 1917.
By analyzing samples collected by navy divers, scientists found traces of TNT in the water column, seabed sediment, and local wildlife. In one experiment, 56 out of 59 mussels placed near the wreck showed traces of the explosive. The contamination was linked to cellular stress in the mussels, including lower glycogen reserves and increased levels of the pigment lipofuscin.
While the pollution currently appears relatively localized, experts warn that the environmental impact may worsen as the metal hulls and mine casings continue to corrode, exposing more explosive material. The research suggests that while the chemical exposure may be sublethal, it significantly affects the cellular metabolism and oxidative stress of marine organisms near the wrecks.
