North Sumatra and Indonesia's Marine Ministry Accelerate Flood Recovery

The provincial government of North Sumatra (Sumut) and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) agreed to speed up post‑flood rehabilitation in the region. Acting provincial secretary Sulaiman Harahap met with officials from the Directorate General for Strengthening Marine Product Competitiveness on 23 July 2026 to discuss restoring the marine and fisheries sector, which was hit by severe flooding.

The cooperation will focus on rebuilding infrastructure and supporting livelihoods in the affected areas of Sumut, as well as in Aceh and West Sumatra, with the programme slated for phased completion by 2028. Officials highlighted the high potential of the Nias Islands for fisheries growth and pledged targeted, accountable assistance.

"We appreciate KKP’s support in accelerating post‑disaster recovery and expect it to revive the local economy," Harahap said. The ministry affirmed its mandate to deliver aid swiftly and accurately, aiming to get the fishing industry back on track across the three provinces.
