North Sumatra develops integrated fisheries zones

The North Sumatra Provincial Government is implementing a strategic program to develop integrated capture fisheries and aquaculture zones, utilizing a ‘hulu ke hilir’ (upstream to downstream) approach. In collaboration with the University of North Sumatra (USU), the North Sumatra Marine and Fisheries Service (DKP) has developed a master plan to ensure fish products undergo processing and packaging to increase economic value and fisherman welfare.

For 2026, the development of these priority zones will focus on the west and east coasts of North Sumatra. In 2027, the program will expand to the Nias Islands, including Nias, North Nias, West Nias, South Nias, and Gunungsitol City. The selection of these locations is based on production data; in 2025, North Sumatra's fisheries production reached 382,127.77 tons. The production target for 2026 is set at 383,036.91 tons.
