North Sumatra plans alternative Medan–Berastagi route for tourists

The North Sumatra Provincial Government is planning an alternative route between Medan and Berastagi to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety on the main Jalan Jamin Ginting road. Governor Bobby Nasution stated that physical intervention on this route is targeted to begin in 2027, with completion expected between 2028 and 2029.

The alternative path will focus on tourism vehicles with six wheels or fewer, while logistics and heavy transport will continue to use the existing main route. The project involves intervening in various road sections owned by central, provincial, and district governments across Deli Serdang and Karo.

While the province continues to advocate for the Medan–Berastagi toll road to be included in the national planning blueprint by Bappenas, this alternative route serves as a faster interim solution. Additionally, the government plans to improve basic infrastructure in tourism areas, such as Tahura Berastagi and Tugu Perjuangan Berastagi, focusing on street lighting, drainage, and pedestrian paths rather than large-scale commercial developments.
