North Tohoku banks to integrate to counter population decline

Aomori Michinoku Bank, Akita Bank, and Iwate Bank have announced they are entering discussions to integrate their operations. The three institutions aim to form a management integration through a holding company structure by April 2028.

This move is driven by a sense of crisis regarding rapid population decline in the North Tohoku region, specifically in Akita, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures. The integration seeks to achieve synergies in regional production, capital and profitability, and management stability.

If successful, the combined group will hold total assets exceeding 13 trillion yen, making it the largest regional financial group in the Tohoku region, surpassing Sendai-based 77 Bank. While the banks will maintain their individual names and legal identities, they will coordinate management through the group structure.
