North Wales councils delay introduction of visitor levy

Several North Wales councils have decided to delay or reject the introduction of a visitor levy, a move welcomed by local tourism businesses. Anglesey council has rejected the tax due to concerns regarding its impact on the tourism sector, while Conwy and Gwynedd councils have postponed decisions following public consultations.

Under Welsh Government legislation, local authorities have the power to implement a nightly fee for overnight stays to fund tourism-related services and infrastructure. If implemented, proposed rates included £1.30 plus VAT for most accommodations and 75p plus VAT for hostels or tent pitches.

Consultation data revealed significant opposition to the levy. In Anglesey, over 70% of respondents opposed the charge, including more than 80% of businesses and visitors. In Conwy, 62.1% of respondents expressed opposition. Dr. Linda Osti of Bangor University suggested that tourism tax legislation should allow for more flexibility at a sub-county level rather than a uniform approach across all counties.
