North-West Nigeria Climate Summit proposes unified regional framework
The North-West Development Commission (NWDC) has called for a unified coordination mechanism to harmonize climate action across the seven states of North-West Nigeria. During the North-West Climate Summit in Abuja, NWDC Managing Director Professor Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji emphasized that climate resilience must be central to the region's development strategy to combat threats such as irregular rainfall, drought, desertification, and flooding.
The summit proposed the North-West Climate Initiative, which includes the establishment of a Climate Academy, a Climate Investment Marketplace, and a Climate Fund. These frameworks aim to mobilize investment and bridge the gap between policymaking and practical implementation to protect agriculture, water security, and infrastructure.
Convened by Alhaji Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, the summit brought together state governors and local government leaders to address environmental pressures that threaten food security and economic stability in the region.
