North West UK sees growth in building materials sales

The North West of England has emerged as one of only two UK regions to show growth in building materials sales, according to the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF). Data from the Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) indicates that the North West saw a 1.3% increase in value sales between April and June 2026 compared to the same period last year.

Scotland recorded the highest growth at 7.8%, while the North West was the second-best performing region. In contrast, most other regions saw declines, with London experiencing the sharpest drop of 5.6%.

Industry experts noted that while value sales have risen, significant price inflation suggests that sales volumes may actually be flat compared to 2025. BMF officials highlighted the need for government action to restore confidence in public and private house building to support the wider construction supply chain.
