Northam Platinum seeks bids after unsolicited approach from major PGM producer

Northam Platinum Holdings has initiated a competitive process to consider proposals from third parties following an unsolicited, exploratory, and non-binding approach from a major producer in the South African platinum-group metals (PGM) industry.

The approach may involve either a corporate-level or an asset-level transaction. Following the announcement, Northam’s shares surged as much as 11% on the Johannesburg stock exchange before a short trading suspension, eventually closing up 3.1%. The company stated that the process is intended to crystallize long-term value and improve shareholder options.

While the identity of the interested party has not been officially confirmed by Northam, the sector is highly concentrated. Sibanye-Stillwater and Impala Platinum Holdings have both distanced themselves from the interest. The company is currently working to expand its PGM output, targeting 1.5 million ounces by the early next decade.
