Northampton Mayorhold car park to close permanently

West Northamptonshire Council has announced the permanent closure of the Mayorhold car park in Northampton due to significant structural deterioration. A recent condition survey revealed widespread corrosion and crumbling concrete, posing a safety risk to users.

The car park, which is over 50 years old, is slated for demolition as part of the broader Greyfriars redevelopment project. Council officials stated that extensive repairs would be required to ensure safety, but such expenditures are not justifiable given the building's planned demolition and its history of low daily utilization.

Cllr John Slope, Cabinet Member for Finance, emphasized that user safety is the priority and noted that the council cannot justify spending taxpayer funds on a facility earmarked for removal. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative parking facilities in the town centre, such as Grosvenor, St Michaels, Wellington Street, and Newlands.
