Northbridge precinct receives heritage listing for Greek migrant history

A historic precinct in Northbridge, Western Australia, has been added to the State Register of Heritage Places for its significance to the Greek migrant community. The site, located on Aberdeen and William streets, served as a vital social, cultural, and commercial hub for migrants from Greece and southern Europe during the interwar years.

The listing includes three Victorian and Federation-era houses that have been owned and occupied by Greek families since the 1930s, alongside the Kakulas Brothers continental grocery store. Established in 1929, the grocery store is noted as a rare example of a family-run business that has remained at its original location under the founding family's management for over 90 years.

Heritage Minister Simone McGurk stated that the listing acknowledges the enduring role of the Greek community and the contribution of migrants in shaping the state’s cultural fabric. The precinct, along with the nearby Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helene, embodies the multicultural history of the region.
