Northeast Brazil emerges as major wine production hub

The Northeast region of Brazil is emerging as a significant force in the national wine market. According to the 2026 Wine Yearbook released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Northeastern producers generated 22.67 million liters in 2025, accounting for 7.32% of the national volume. This makes the region the second-largest producer in the country, trailing only the South.

A notable aspect of this growth is production efficiency. With only 32 wineries spread across Pernambuco, Bahia, Paraíba, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe, the region averages 708.46 thousand liters per winery. This average is more than double that of the South and nearly seven times higher than the Southeast.

In Pernambuco, the Agreste region is establishing itself as a specialized hub. Supported by research from Embrapa Semiárido, UFAPE, and the Instituto Agronômico de Pernambuco, local producers have successfully cultivated varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc. The Vinícola Vale das Colinas serves as a prominent example of this development, utilizing artisanal and sustainable practices to produce boutique wines.
