Northeast Brazil: Geographic diversity and socioeconomic evolution

The Northeast region of Brazil is characterized by significant geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity. Comprising nine states—Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, and Bahia—the region is divided into geoeconomic sub-regions: the Zona da Mata, Agreste, Sertão, and Meio-Norte.

Historically associated with poverty, drought, and migration to southern Brazil, the region has undergone notable transformations. Recent decades have seen shifts in economic development, urban growth, and consumption patterns in major cities such as Recife, Fortaleza, and Salvador, altering the region's previous reputation of scarcity and social inequality.
