Northeast Brazil project maps transition to green economy
The Futuros Verdes no Nordeste project has launched across the nine states of Northeast Brazil to map economic opportunities and competencies for a transition to a low-carbon economy. A partnership between the Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS) and the Centro de Estudos e Sistemas Avançados de Recife (CESAR), the initiative seeks to transform sustainability knowledge into strategic guidelines by consulting experts and productive sector representatives.
The project aims to identify professional training and qualification needs to meet the demands of climate change and evolving production models. While the region faces severe environmental threats—including desertification of the Caatinga biome and risks from rising sea levels in cities like Recife and Fortaleza—it also holds significant potential. The Northeast currently generates 92% of Brazil's wind energy and hosts five of the country's ten largest solar plants.
Experts emphasize that the transition is not automatic and requires coordinated planning, infrastructure, and specialized labor. Key areas for development include bioeconomy, biomass, ethanol, and renewable energy sectors.
