Pernambuco political shifts: PSDB-Cidadania exits Lyra coalition

The political landscape in Pernambuco is shifting ahead of the 2026 elections. An intervention commission of the PSDB-Cidadania federation, led by Deputy Aécio Neves, has requested the Electoral Court (TRE-PE) to immediately remove the parties from the 'Pernambuco de Coração' coalition led by Governor Raquel Lyra (PSD).

The commission cited a “vício de competência” (defect of competence) regarding the previous decision to support Lyra, declaring the federation's official position as neutral for the 2026 gubernatorial and senatorial races. This move follows internal friction where the national leadership of Cidadania favored alignment with Recife Mayor João Campos (PSB) over Lyra.

Adding to the political tension, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has explicitly endorsed João Campos for governor, stating, “Quem vota no Lula, vota no João” (Those who vote for Lula, vote for João). This endorsement marks a clear electoral distancing from Governor Lyra. Meanwhile, Campos continues to build his platform through sector-specific dialogues, such as recent meetings with dental professionals to discuss healthcare infrastructure and professional valuation.
