Northeast India intensifies crackdown on drug abuse

Authorities in Northeast India are intensifying efforts to combat rising drug abuse. In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to establish government-run rehabilitation centres in every constituency. This move follows complaints regarding private facilities, where allegations have surfaced that drugs are being supplied within the centres themselves. The government intends to strictly scrutinize private providers to reduce reliance on them.

In Arunachal Pradesh, Governor K. T. Parnaik has launched youth-led awareness campaigns, including declamation and painting competitions under the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ initiative. These programs aim to engage students in building a drug-free society.

Officials noted that the region is facing significant pressure from narcotics flowing from Myanmar through states like Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
