Northeast India intensifies crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse

Authorities in Northeast India are intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse. In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed an SP-level conference at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, emphasizing the state's role as a transit corridor for drugs originating from Myanmar. Sarma noted that traffickers are increasingly using routes through Arunachal Pradesh to move narcotics into Assam and the rest of India.

Since 2021, Assam Police report seizing drugs valued at approximately Rs 3,250 crore and apprehending roughly 26,000 individuals. The Chief Minister called for heightened vigilance in specific regions, including Barak Valley, Golaghat, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and border areas like Dhubri and Kokrajhar.

Simultaneously, in Tripura, administrative officials held a special meeting in Agartala to discuss strategies for creating a drug-free society. The meeting focused on protecting the youth through expanded awareness campaigns, early intervention, and strict enforcement against illegal trafficking. Officials emphasized that combating addiction requires collective action from families, educational institutions, and government agencies.
