NorthEast United FC advances to Durand Cup quarterfinals
NorthEast United FC secured a place in the quarterfinals of the 135th Durand Cup after defeating FC1 3-1 in their final Group F fixture at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.
Parthib Sunder Gogoi scored twice, with goals in both halves, while Alaaeddine Ajaraie added a third for the Highlanders. FC1's lone goal was scored by Mohmad Ilyas in the 71st minute. The victory allowed NorthEast United to complete the group stage with a perfect record of three wins from three matches, finishing as Group F winners.
The match featured an early moment of drama when FC1 was awarded a penalty in the seventh minute following a handball by Robin Yadav. However, NorthEast United debutant goalkeeper K. Mohanraj saved the spot-kick from Mousa Ahmed Quersehi. NorthEast United responded quickly, taking the lead just two minutes later through Gogoi following an assist from Jithin M.S.
FC1, making their debut in the Durand Cup, concluded their campaign with three points from three matches.
