Northeast US faces flood threat as storms linger after weekend deluge

A slow‑moving storm system that drenched the Northeast over the holiday weekend left parts of New England and the Mid‑Atlantic vulnerable to flooding. Connecticut reported more than six inches of rain in Danbury, while heavy downpours in New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts caused road flooding and trapped vehicles. In Ocean Township, New Jersey, a BJ’s Wholesale Club roof collapsed, injuring two of the 27 people inside but allowing all to escape safely. The National Weather Service issued flood watches for Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts as the heaviest rain lingered.

Flash flood warnings were also posted for parts of New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey as storms broke a recent heat wave that saw record highs of 104 °F at LaGuardia Airport. New Jersey health officials are investigating about 25 possible heat‑related deaths, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to leave basement apartments if water rises. Roughly 450,000 customers remained without power after the storms. A brief break in rain is expected mid‑week, but another disturbance may bring additional showers later in the week.
